What is the difference between chlorine and salt chlorination?

Traditional Chlorine

Traditional chlorine is the most common way to sanitise pool water. Chlorinated pools are maintained by regularly adding in chlorine, which then break down into chemicals which clean your pool. This is generally done on a weekly basis.

Saltwater

A common misconception about saltwater pool systems is that they contain no chlorine, however, saltwater pools have just enough chlorine to maintain a healthy pool environment. This happens in a machine called a chlorinator through a process called electrolysis which generates chlorine from the salt in the water as it passes through the electrolytic cell, which then sanitises the pool water.
